No August bank holiday is complete without the annual Newlyn Fish Festival. The day is a celebration of all things to do with the sea, fishing and seafood and is popular with locals and visitors alike.
The small village is lined with stalls selling fresh, local fish and introduces some fantastic specimens that aren’t commonplace in your usual supermarket! As well as fish you can cook at home, there is a range of superb seafood to eat on the day with paellas, grilled mackerel, fish curries and barbequed lobsters.
There are cookery demonstrations galore and the festival’s famous fish auction. The best of Cornwall’s fishmongers fight it out on the stage to win the title of ‘Cornish Fishmonger of the Year’ and at the centrepiece of the festival is a fish display, showcasing all the varieties of fish this side of the Atlantic.
Aside from all the fantastic food there are three stages with live entertainment, gig-racing, RNLI displays and the annual Lugger Rowing World Championship. There is also a Fish Tales Tent with storytelling and puppeteer performances – perfect for the kids!
