Visit St Ives on Saturday 29th August and you’ll be for a real treat. The RNLI (the charity that saves lives at sea) will be hosting their annual St Ives Lifeboat Day, where crowds descend on the harbour for a fun filled day, to help raise funds and awareness.
The atmosphere is always fantastic, and this year won’t be any different. With plenty to see and do too, it’s the perfect excuse for a late summer visit to St Ives. You’ll see their lifeboat (The Princess Royal – 12-009) in action, a helicopter rescue exercise, be able to meet the crew, browse the stalls, enter the raffle and so much more, all with St Ives harbour as the backdrop.
If you don’t know much about the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, it truly is a great cause, one which many owe their lives to, and one which is funded solely by donations. The RNLI relies on volunteers too – and this allows a large proportion of donations to go towards purchasing the all important state of the art lifesaving equipment.
As one of our chosen charities, we’re proud to support the RNLI, and last year, our donation of £2000 helped make up part of the total figure of £11,123.80 raised on the day. Since then, the RNLI St Ives have gone on to reach their £100,000 target for the arrival of the new ‘Shannon’ class lifeboat, due to be unveiled in Autumn 2015; a fantastic achievement.
As a thank you for supporting the RNLI, the Aspects staff were treated to a spin in their lifeboat, and it was something of an experience…
And to top it off, we even had a visit from ‘Alfie’ the seal, (a regular visitor to St Ives), who swam up to the boat to say hello while the crowds looked on from the pier…
This year, as they’ve now reached their target for the new lifeboat, we’ll be providing RNLI St Ives with new jackets for all the crew, and a transponder; a location device used in crew training exercises.
We’ll be based in the entrance to the Lifeboat Station again, so feel free to pop in and say hello!
