Due to the rural nature of Cornwall’s towns and villages, many community-run venues provide a lifeline for people, especially the elderly and more vulnerable within the community, as well as those who rely on public transport.

Porthleven, a charming town centred around its harbour, is no exception; it’s located over three miles from the nearest large town (and the amenities associated with a larger population). Porthleven Public Hall plays an important role in community life, providing a venue for regular groups, organisations, meetings and services that otherwise may not be available in the town. This means that many locals, especially those who are more reliant on public transport, can attend various sessions at the hall. Furthermore, the hall brings people together, helping to solidify the community spirit in Porthleven.

Weekly groups held at the hall include: The Women’s Institute, Porthleven Companions, Roll The Dice Community Gaming Group, Slimming World, and Bingo. For those looking to get fit, there’s a selection of sports clubs, including Supastrikers, Porthleven Judo Kwai, Yoga with Nina, and Move It or Lose It. The hall is also booked for a monthly clinic with Coastal Ear Health, bringing a valuable service directly to the residents of this town. Furthermore, the hall can also be hired for those all-important children’s birthday parties.
