Recently we have donated £1,000 to Mousehole Bird Hospital, a charity caring for both land and sea birds, in West Cornwall.
Mousehole Bird Hospital is the only wildlife centre in Cornwall dedicated purely to the care of wild birds. They treat over 1,000 birds per year and aim to rescue, rehabilitate, and release them back to the wild.
The registered charity was founded in 1928 by two sisters Dorothy and Pog Yglesias, and depends entirely on legacies, donations, and membership subscriptions to fund its operations, and receives no government funding.
In August 2022, the hospital had a devastating outbreak of Avian Flu that led to a cull of all 200 birds onsite and has been temporarily closed as a result. Working with DEFRA, the charity is absolutely committed to re-opening the hospital in autumn this year, stronger than it was before, investing in a new Bird Care Centre, reception facilities and an isolation unit to improve their biosecurity. They will also be investing in their staff and volunteers to continually improve the standards of treatment offered, placing veterinary excellence at the heart of everything they do.
For over 90 years Mousehole Bird Hospital has cared for the wildlife we all cherish, and they continue to work hard on their vision - to be recognised as the preeminent treatment centre for wild birds in Cornwall based on their quality of care and clinical excellence.
Visit their website to learn more about what they do, and you can donate towards their hospital improvements here. They will also be seeking volunteers over the forthcoming breeding season to work in their temporary facilities, prior to opening the main site again in the autumn.
