Holidays in Widemouth Bay

Widemouth Bay is a beautiful beach, just three miles from the town of Bude. With one and a half miles of golden sand, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing holiday within easy reach of the facilities at Bude.

Situated on the North coast, Widemouth Bay is an open, exposed stretch of coast, ideal for surfers. Equally enjoyed by families, children can explore the rock pools exposed at low tide. With beach cafes, parking and seasonal lifeguards, it’s the perfect day out.

Though Widemouth Bay appears to be one large beach, it’s divided into two beaches. Blackrock, the south end, is privately owned and is dog-friendly all year, perfect if your pooch is joining you on holiday.

Did you know...

Widemouth Bay is the landing point for communications cables linking the UK to other countries?

Widemouth Bay Beach

Of course, the best part of Widemouth Bay is Widemouth Bay Beach - 1.5 miles of glorious sand.

Though it appears to be one large expanse of sand, the beach is actually divided into two sections: the North Beach and the South Beach (also known as Black Rock). This division comes in the form of a barrier of natural rocks - the largest being the landmark known as Black Rock. At low tide, hundreds of rock pools are exposed - perfect to keep the children (and adults) entertained.

Ample parking is available at Widemouth Bay, but if you don't fancy getting your toes sandy, you can park at one of the free viewing areas!

There is a seasonal dog ban on this beach from the 15th May to the 30th September between 10am and 6pm. Outside these hours and from 1st October to 14th May dogs are allowed.

Things to do in Widemouth Bay

If you fancy a change from rock-pooling and making sand castles on the beach, you might like to try surfing. Don't worry if you're a beginner you can take surfing lessons with Freewave Surf Academy or OA Surf Club

There are lots of lovely walks in and around Widemouth Bay. You could try walking to Bude, via Philips Point Nature Reserve, over Efford Down, to the watch tower at Compass Point and then follow the canal into Bude.

Places to eat in Widemouth Bay

There are several eateries in and around Widemouth Bay.

Firstly, The Bay View Inn provides a selection of seasonal classics and food with a twist. They have three separate indoor dining areas, several alfresco dining areas and spaces available for private hire. In peak season, they open a snack shack, serving a variety of take away foods.

Close to the beach, you'll find Black Rock Cafe and Bistro, serving freshly-cooked artisan food. You can enjoy your food inside, or on the deck soaking up the views.

With direct access to the beach, Widemouth Bay Cafe serves all day breakfast, fish and chips, burgers, cream teas and other light snacks.

Slightly outside of Widemouth Bay, Elements Cafe Bar and Restaurant serves a selection of food, specialising in pizza and pasta. The restaurant has beautiful views to enjoy while you dine.

Great location close to beach Very well fitted out everything top quality Plenty of space for us all

We had a great week at 2 The Mallows which has a fantastic location & plenty of space for a family group. The quality of furnishings & equipment was very good & we had enough warm weather to be able to enjoy sitting outside at the rear of the house (nicely quiet & enclosed) when we weren’t exploring the wonderful coastline. The headroom in the upstairs bedroom was an issue, particularly in the en-suite. Luckily there was a spare bathroom on the ground floor that was utilised instead but future guests need to be aware of the height restrictions.

It is lovely to hear you had great time at 2 The Mallows, and that you made use of the private outside space for those sunny days! We do understand that taller guests may have issue with the sloping ceilings in the upstairs bedroom and ensuite, so we advertise this as restricted height and not suitable for people over 6ft, but we hope you agree the views from the upstairs are worth it! Katy, Customer Services.

We were battered by Storm Kathleen for half of our stay, but that mattered far less because we were so comfortable in this lovely holiday home, so wonderfully close to the beach. It is really well-equipped for cooking, leisurely meals and games around the table, and chilling out together - coffee machine, smart TV with Netflix, two fridges are all great extras. You need to watch your head in the upstairs bedroom under the eaves, but it has a view to haggle for. Highly recommend!

It's wonderful to hear that despite the strong weather we have encountered so far this year, it did not impact you stay at all, and you got to enjoy the many favourable amenities the property has to offer. While the eaves may take some getting used to for taller guests, we hope you agree that the spacious top floor bedroom and en-suite allows an added level of privacy for larger parties, as well as those amazing views of Widemouth Bay. Thank you for the lovely review. Phoebe, Customer services
