Holidays in Bude

Carrying the title of Cornwall’s northern-most coastal town, Bude is perfectly placed to enjoy some of the north coast’s beautiful beaches and coastal walks.

Bude has so much to offer when it comes to things to do, including a fabulous town with a wide selection of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants – not to mention the wildest live music venue in Cornwall. In addition, visitors can meander along Bude Canal, stretch out on one of the many beaches, or enjoy a gentle cruise in a pedal boat or kayak, observing the beautiful area from a different angle. The town is home to the historic Bude Sea Pool and The Castle Bude, both a must if you are in the area.

For those who enjoy walking, the South West Coast Path can be easily accessed from Bude. You’ll be blown away by the stunning scenery and breathtaking views along the coastline – it’s also a great dog-friendly day out!

With so much on the doorstep, it’s the perfect destination for a holiday by the sea!

Top tip

Take a dip in the historic Bude Sea Pool at Summerleaze Beach!

Beaches in Bude

Each with its own character and charm, the beaches in Bude are great whether you’re a swimmer, surfer or sand-snoozer.

Summerleaze Beach – Boasting the iconic sea pool, and only a five-minute walk from the centre of Bude, Summerleaze Beach is Bude’s central hub of sand, surf, and sun. Clean, safe, and easy on the eye, Summerleaze Beach is a big hit with surfers, sun-bathers, and families. However, it’s the sheer variety of activities that mark Summerleaze as arguably one of the best beaches in Cornwall for outdoor pursuits and watersports so definitely swing by if you love a hands-on holiday.

Crooklets Beach – At low tide, you’ll find a huge expanse of golden sand along with lots of rockpools to explore, making it very popular with families. There’s also decent surf and lots of amenities nearby including a beach café for those all-important ice creams and even a skate park.

Widemouth Bay Beach – Stretching across one and a half miles of golden sands, Widemouth Bay is divided into two halves, the North beach and the South beach, separated by a natural barrier of rock known as Black Rock. As the tide retreats, amazing rock formations are exposed - perfect for rockpooling and getting back to nature!

Northcott Mouth Beach – Three miles North of Bude is the small rocky beach Northcott Mouth, which is owned by the National Trust. As the tide drops, the beach opens up to expansive sand with rockpools dotted all around - perfect for exploring with the dog all year round.

Bude Castle

Ordinarily, a castle built on the sand might not seem like the best idea, but Bude Castle has really stood the test of time! Built around 1830, the castle was formally the home of Victorian inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney. It’s now a heritage centre with lots of fascinating exhibitions and art galleries, making this impressive feat of architecture an interesting day whatever the weather.

Bude Sea Pool

Opened in 1930, this partially man-made tidal swimming pool in the rocks of Summerleaze beach provides a lovely, safe place to swim, perfect if you’re not ready to swim in the sea. The pool is open all year round, but of course, it depends on the tide and weather, so always check before heading out.

Surfing & Watersports

Based near Summerleaze beach, Bude Surfing Experience provides water sports equipment hire and watersports lessons so you can hit the waves running as you try your hand at surfing and stand-up paddleboarding!

You’ll also find popular big names from FatFace to Ann’s Cottage, which houses all the top surfing brands.

Walks

With lots of stunning walks in and around Bude, walkers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic routes. Head out onto the South West Coast path for dramatic coastal paths or head inland and explore the many walkways, which take you across crisscrossing fields, through woodland trails and even past Bude’s historic aqueduct.

Dining Out

After a day frolicking in the sea, we often find ourselves in need of a big feed, which is perfect when you’re surrounded by all the great places to eat in Bude. A comfortable annex apartment in a nice friendly village with excellent community shop and very nice pub where the pizza’s are very good indeed. Very well equipped. Good for Bude and widemouth bay, but a fair journey to Padstow or surrounding areas.

A very comfy and relaxing stay here, its like home from home. Set in a lovely village plenty of walks nearby.

Chy-Ky is a lovely apartment in Marhamchurch. It is very well equipped and had everything we needed for our stay. Chris and Jo, the owners, made us welcome and we were particularly grateful for the cream tea, biscuits and milk which we found on arrival. It is a short drive from Marhamchurch into Bude or alternatively a pleasant walk alongside the canal. Opposite Chy-Ky is a well stocked community shop. If we returned to the area we would have no hesitation in booking this apartment again.

What a fantastic property - spacious, spotlessly clean and very well equipped - we didn't want to leave. A very short drive or taxi ride into Bude which is a lovely town and the property is ideally placed for visiting tourist attractions both in Cornwall and Devon. Do be aware that the Bullers Arms in the village does not serve "pub food", only mobile food vans.

A great little cottage in a prime location. Easy to get to local attractions and beach's. The local shop was great and if you have kids there is a field with play area minutes away. I highly recommend this cottage.

Chy-Ky is a beautiful, well equipped apartment in the lovely, quiet village of Marhamchurch and was perfect for our family holiday. The location was perfect for getting to Bude and surrounding areas. The village shop was well stocked including lovely home made produce. We also received a wonderful welcome package of cream teas, biscuits and cup cakes on arrival to the apartment which was much appreciated.

This was our second visit to Chy-Ky and we enjoyed it just as much as the first time. We particularly like the proximity to the canal which is walking distance to Bude. We also appreciate the mobile food outlets that visit three times a week in the evening. The addition of the Velux ceiling window blind was great.

We had a great week, CHY-KY was spotless and had everything you need, lovely Village, enjoyed walk into Bude along the Canal just down the road in the Village. We definitely recommend this property. July 2021.

Apartment was clean , well kitted out and in a lovely village location near to numerous walks and attractions . Being a short drive to the A39 made it easy and convenient in travelling both North and South for visiting other locations . Recommend the walks down the side of the canal into Bude and over to Widemouth Bay. Owners who live next door were very helpful and friendly . No hesitation in recommending this property .

One of the best cottages we have stayed in for several years. Will book again next year.

We had a lovely week in Chy-ky. The place was very clean and welcoming. Thank you for the cream tea and other things to get us started-very useful. We loved the location. The village of Marhamchurch was very peaceful and had a pub and a well stocked shop. The walk into Bude along the canal was lovely and we did that a few times. Everything we needed was nearby. The weather was perfect and we didn't want to leave. Thank you for such a lovely place to celebrate my 60th birthday!

We stayed at Chy-ky just a short drive from Bude, everything from the property, super helpful owners and Aspects themselves was first class. We will definitely be booking with them in the future

This was our first Aspect Holiday and Chy-Ky has set the bar very high indeed. The accommodation is in a fantastic location, is spacious and was perfect for our family getaway. Our 18 month and 3 year old boys loved being able to roam freely between rooms and enjoy the whole space and trips out to explore Bude and the local area are just a short journey away Highly recommended!!

Super holiday in a lovely location in the centre of the village.Lots of interesting walks nearby. Spacious, well equipped accommodation. Very clean and comfortable. Highly recommended for discovering beautiful North Cornwall and Devon.

Located short drive from Bude, with a pub few yards away. Great accommodation with lots of extras, well thought out space. Clean & bright. Would go back again.

We found the owners Chris and Jo very hospitable during our stay and appreciated their guidance about the local activities on offer. If we needed anything they were just next door. The house is in a great location and was very clean and tidy and well equipped for all our needs. We particularly enjoyed having meals around the dining table and hope to come back soon. We will definitely recommend the Chy-Ky to our friends and family. Peter and Karin July 2020.

Recommend this accommodation as the location is excellent. Beautiful walk along the canal path into Bude. Great for exploring the coast. Very comfortable. Well decorated with a seaside theme which I love. The Annex is well equipt with everything you need. Lovely welcome with the cream tea and fridge essentials. Covid-19 deep clean was evident and felt very safe. A blind on the Velux window would be my only recommendation as the light woke me up early. Had a great week...would definitely recomend to friends and family. Another fab Aspects home. ??
