Holidays in Mousehole

Mousehole is an idyllic village and fishing port with quaint cobbled streets full of bistros and art-galleries. Sit on the harbour and admire views of St Michael’s Mount or take a short drive to nearby Marazion to walk along the golden sands.

Mousehole is a great community with a fantastic atmosphere, and self catering in Mousehole is effortless. Enjoy harbour views and artisan foods at Mousehole Deli & kitchen, afternoon tea at the Tremayne Tea Room or sit down for an evening meal at 2 Fore Street, a French bistro-style restaurant on Mousehole harbour front. Finish off your evening with a pint of local ale at the Ship Inn, one of the famous St Austell Brewery establishments. For more info, read our blog post on Eating out in Mousehole.

Things to do in Mousehole

Mousehole is best when entered on foot, or bus, or bike. Cars are not the way to see Mousehole and best left outside. If you have to bring a car, there’s a big car park on the Penzance side of the village, close to The Old Coastguard Hotel.

Christmas lights

Mousehole has celebrated Christmas with beautiful lights for 40 years! The village is a winter wonderland in the dark nights and grey seas of winter. Many villages have light shows today but Mousehole is special. Holiday cottages overlooking the harbour always enjoy an extra special Cornish Christmas. Read more on our blog about Mousehole lights.

Walks around Mousehole

For those who are not so content with staying in their holiday homes, the walks around Mousehole are a joy all year round.  There are some fabulous circular walks but we think there's something particularly satisfying about catching a bus from Mousehole and walking back in (especially if your walk exits the village in a north of westerly direction; you'll soon discover the town is nestled at the bottom of a very steep hill!)  Read our blog on Mousehole Walks.

Coasteering in Mousehole

If you're seeking adrenaline and adventure, check out Coasteering Adventures.

Mousehole is one of Cornwall’s top Coasteering destinations. Nestled in the shelter of Mounts Bay, Mousehole offers multiple coasteering routes for all ages and abilities. Coasteering Adventures are thrilled to be the exclusive provider of coasteering from this location. Book an adventure and you will experience cliff jumping, sea swimming, climbing, bouldering, exploring caves and floating through gullies. With each session tailored to the group, you can choose the level that you are comfortable with.

Dating back to the 13th century Mousehole has a rich history tying it to the sea. 1595 saw all but 1 house (which still stands today) burned to the ground by the Spanish armada. 100 Years later Mousehole became a haven for the ‘Barbary Pirates’ with a number of caves on the route being where their treasure was hidden. During the 1800’s Mousehole settled into a thriving fishing village and you’ll regularly see the small fishing boats from Mousehole pass our groups whilst out on route.

The Quay was built in 1392, holding the harbour like a pair of protective arms. Fishing was always important to Mousehole. These days there are fewer boats fishing from the village but there is an active fishing fleet operating out of nearby Newlyn, a town worth a visit on its own account. Tom Bawcock's Eve, Mousehole

Every year, the people of Mousehole celebrate the bravery of Tom Bawcock. Years ago, when the boats couldn't get out in the storms, the villages had no fish to eat. Tom dared to take his boat out and returned with enough fish to make a Star Gazey fish pie for the whole village.

Another fantastic stay In beautiful Mousehole at this super cottage!!! M & A Coggins

Newly renovated cottage a few streets back from the harbour. Great kitchen and large downstairs bathroom. The non en-suite bedroom at the front is the most spacious! We had problem parking by at the north car park each day in September.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

Thank you for your comments; we're happy to hear you enjoyed the property so much and found the location perfect to access the beautiful harbour front. Parking is occasionally hard to come by in the small town, especially at peak times as you mentioned. Our team are always happy to advise on car parking in the area and it is always worth looking into parking options beforehand on the local council website. Thank you again, for your review, and we hope to welcome you back again soon. Phoebe, Customer Services

Wonderful location right in centre of Mousehole, lovely and comfortable and clean

We had a lovely stay. The property was clean and beautifully decorated, very calming and cosy. It’s in a good location, with easy access to the village centre. We were really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the restaurants, pub, the shops in Mousehole, we had some great meals without needing to get in the car. The bus links around the area are also very good.

Would highly recommend Aspects Holidays. Had another perfect stay at Fo’c’sle. M & A Coggins

A very pleasant little cottage only a couple of minutes’ stroll from Mousehole harbour (but tucked away so you don’t feel you’re right in the middle of the crowds). The decor and furnishing is done to a high standard, and overall the property is comfortable and well equipped.

Note there is no dishwasher - this is disappointing for a holiday let. Also there is no freezer or ice compartment in the fridge, which is also a bit inconvenient.

The outdoor space (a small enclosed courtyard) isn’t great - unfortunately it hadn’t been cleaned properly before our arrival and smelt strongly of drains, so we hardly used it.

There is no dedicated parking space for the property, and parking in Mousehole is tricky, with the main car parks being 5-10 mins walk away (and fairly expensive at up to £11 for 24 hours).

It is great to hear that you found Fo'c'sle comfortable and well equipped, and the proximity to the harbour is definitely a bonus! Although these facilities were not advertised at being provided at the time, we are pleased to report that the owner has since installed a dishwasher, washer dryer and countertop freezer. They have also had the drains investigated and cleaned up the courtyard. Unfortunately, the courtyard had suffered a bit in the recent weather. Parking is occasionally hard to come by in Mousehole, especially at peak times. Being a traditional fishing village, it was not designed with cars in mind at the time but is part of what gives it such a charming appeal! Our team are always happy to advise on car parking in the area and it is always worth looking into parking options beforehand on the local council website. Thanks for your comments, and we hope to see you back in Cornwall soon. Lucy, Customer Services

Very well equipped and comfortable cottage. Well situated cottage and close to the harbour. A lovely holiday.

Fabulous little cottage in the centre of Mousehole, beautifully furnished, clean and comfortable. Perfectly placed for walks and good restaurants in the village.

We had a lovely week in Fo'c'sle, the cottage is very comfortable and has everything you need. It's in a great position, a short walk from the harbour, pub and restaurants. Parking can be a struggle but we managed to find a space in the harbour car park every day although I'm not sure that would be as easy in high season. There are lots of places to visit a short drive away - Sennen Cove, Lands End, Lamorna Cove, Porthcurno and St Just. Will definitely be back again.

We are glad you enjoyed it here. Like many old fishing villages, they were not designed for the vehicles that we have today, so parking can be a little limited, though usually, even in the peak season, guests find spaces within the village. If you are visiting at peak time, please feel free to enquire with the bookings team for advice on private and council parking locations. Tanya, Customer Services

This is a beautiful cottage in a very convenient and quiet location close to the harbour and inside this most beautiful and picturesque village. The quality of fixtures and fittings is high and the comfort of the beds a real plus .

We know Mousehole very well visiting every year for up to 4 weeks over 25 years …and parking is always an issue for some . It is unlikely that you will park your car nearer than 40 metres by away and more likely you will have to park well over 300 metres. It’s worth it .

Our stay was perfect, cosy cottage, very clean & relaxing. Beautiful location, fabulous walks and places to eat on your doorstep.

Lovely quiet location but still close to harbour. Cottage is well equipped and tastefully decorated. Outdoor area would be a bonus in summer, we were there over Christmas. Bathrooms spacious and single bedroom larger than it appears in photos. We would definitely book again. Wouldn't suit someone with mobility issues.

Absolutely loved this beautiful cottage! We went in October half term and it was very cosy with the log burner on in the evenings, really well equipped to cook nice family meals. Nice touches like the cookery books and house magazines and book library. The decor was beautiful and to a really high standard with comfortable beds and sofas. The bathroom was stunning with a big bath tub. The location was fab too, a couple of minutes walk to the harbour. We really enjoyed our stay, and would highly recommend this cottage, thank you.

Perfect in every way, will not hesitate to book again. Andrew & Martha Coggins

We love this area of Cornwall and have been many times. This time we managed to secure a lovely little cottage named Fo'c'sle in the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole. The cottage is very well presented by the owner and beautifully furnished, wanting for nothing other than some grateful holiday makers like ourselves, to move in light the log burner and make it home for a short break ( heaven). I think we ate and drank in every establishment serving food and drink within Mousehole and a few in nearby Newlyn.( make use of the excellent bus service). Our favourite was the Old Custom House, bit pricey but excellent food and drink. Saying that everywhere we ate was very good. Be back soon Colin and Maureen Hughes

I’m so sorry. I wanted to love Fo’c’sle, I really did. The property has clearly been renovated to make it special and it shows in the fixtures and fittings. But it just doesn’t work.

There were so many frustrations with the property. Where to start? Well, with the details on Aspects website. It states, after you’ve booked, that there is "currently" no freezer in the property. Just a fridge with an icebox. This is completely wrong. There is a fridge but it doesn’t have an ice box! I queried in advance if there was an ice cube tray to which Aspects said they were unsure so they recommended I purchase some ice. Instead I bought some trays which turned out to be a waste of money as there is no icebox! And if I’d followed Aspects’ recommendations I would have just ended up with a bag of cold water…

Ironically the property DOES supply an ice tray! But nowhere to make ice! Ended up going to the Old Coastguard for my arrival G&T.

I would respectfully suggest that the washing machine and tumble dryer are replaced with a washer/dryer and the old cupboard above removed to allow a proper fridge/freezer to be installed.

And then you would have space in the kitchen potentially for a dishwasher. Yes, a dishwasher for which the tablets left for us could actually be used. Even the property information pack mentions a dishwasher. Except there isn’t one.

Next, the shower and bathroom fitments. The main issue is the shower in the main bathroom. It has a rain-style shower head approx. 7ft high which means my 5ft 2” wife gets soaked with cold water every time it’s turned on. That’s in addition to the water spraying out of the door. Then we both have to find various places to perch soap, shampoo and a flannel. Why not install a shelf like in the en-suite? The main bathroom also doesn’t have a mirror except for a small shaving mirror. The final issue is that due to the height of the shower head shorter people won’t be able to change the angle of the shower head.

It’s the most awkward shower I’ve ever had, and this includes one on a narrowboat that was only chest high!

The ensuite had a small mirror which, for my wife, only showed the top of her head so I swapped this with the larger one in the bedroom.

Wardrobes – er, none. So don’t bring any clothes you need to hang up

Instruction manuals – er, again none. Stated in the info pack to be in the top drawer of the unit in the lounge but this was devoid of any contents. I ended up googling the make/model of hob and oven as we have never used induction appliances.

TV – why is it placed so far into the alcove that anyone sitting on the sofa can’t see the left hand third of the screen? That area of the room is dead space so could easily be placed so that everyone in the room can see it.

I have to say that there are lots of positives: the quality of workmanship throughout; the lovely décor, tiles (both wall and floor); the high quality appliances, and

We are so sorry for the mix up with the fridge. We had thought there was an icebox in there, but we immediately changed this information on the website upon seeing your feedback. We are again very sorry for this error and can understand the disappointment when you have specifically been told there would be one. There has never been an advertised dishwasher though, however the welcome folders are standardised to say that a few dishwasher tablets and enough washing detergent is supplied to get you started, whether these facilities are available or not. We have discussed your feedback with the property owners, who have said that they will look into getting a washer/dryer and then install a small dishwasher. They are also getting a mirror as suggested, and we have passed on the suggestions of a shelf in the shower. We try to show the storage in the bedrooms as best as possible, the location of the TV in the alcove, and the height of the shower that you mentioned, so that guests will know what to expect, so we are sorry if this was not what you had in mind. The rainfall shower has an additional shower attachment that is lower and can be moved to the desired height, and with this one being used instead of the rainfall shower setting, you can avoid getting soaked with cold water, then switch it to rainfall once it has warmed up. The instructions folder should have been there, and were when we last visited, so we wonder if someone has moved them to a different location. We will check on this. We are glad to hear that there were also a lot of positives but sorry that this property was not for you. We try to offer a wide range of properties that will suit the very varied tastes and needs of individuals, so if you are returning, we would be happy to discuss your requirements further and help you to find somewhere that will better suit your tastes and needs.
